Works in Plaster

“Emma Wood’s work carries the texture and pace of the places she seeks to describe. Her painterly approach displays the vitality and richness of a place at ground level.

Remnants from these neighbourhoods are incorporated like memories – a heap of old gauze, a head gasket from an old car lot. Within the colour and mark-making, a cyclist goes by, people appear. These pieces are like snapshots of a well-loved place. Like cave paintings, they have a direct human touch. They capture the experience of a person here at the moment.

In all her work, Emma seeks to describe the movement associated with people in a particular setting, to refine that movement to some degree an to record it in an ‘impulsive expressive manner’. These images are a celebration of her community and environment. They acknowledge the disorder and abandonment she sees around her, yet her warmth and affection for the place win out.”
